heres the starting thread for my projet ... i will get pics of the before demo ... although i forgot to take some of the before cleanup and gutting ... sorry ... i will be replacing the transom and floor and doing some custom work too (because i dont have any thing else to do ... lol )... my plan for the floor is to replace stringers and install that composit decking material ... however i wanted to get feed back on that before i actually buy the materil ... since the decking will not seal the floor would it be feasable to have it drain into the bottom of the boat and enter the bilge sump through a 2" hole in the side ? also the foam ... i know leaving it exposed to the elements is not the best idea ... could it be sealed ? is this all a bad idea ? i had the idea for the decking because it should outlive me ... lol and i think it would look great ... feedback please ?

UPDATE ... ok so idea change ... im going to glue the pieces of decking on the edges to make them (in a sence) a "sheet" ... any water that gets inside will drain off naturally like it would if the floor was plywood and fiberglass ...

with the age of my boat would i need to or would it just be a good idea to lay 1 more layer of glass to the inside ?
thanks in advance !

Re: 70 glastron 17 ft. trihull - project

Looks similar to my boat, the bow is different ( I like that style better than mine ), though I'm not a fan of the rear seating as much. I'm torn down to the empty stringers, empty transom area with the cap removed. Yesterday I pretty much took the fiberglass that was left after the wood was removed from the center stringer and kicked it over and tore it off by hand. The fiberglass was there just to hold the wood upright, that's it.

I can't say that I'd be a fan of using the composite decking for the floor. It sounds like a good idea, but it just doesn't have the strength for the extra weight you are putting in the boat, not to mention the thickness will screw up some of your dimensions. For the cost of the material, you can find a better alternative.

If you have any questions on what you are getting into, check out my shareaproject link below, or PM me.

Duckee,

Good looking boat! My best friend in high school (32 years ago) had a 17 foot Glastron just like yours. Can't begin to tell you how many hours I spent skiing behind that boat... It's a really great small boat for skiers. Also got great gas mileage. I think he had a 6 gallon tank we'd fill up on the way to the lake and ski most of the day on that one tank...

Good luck with the restoration,

Denning

thanks guys ! im still toying with the idea of the decking ... not positive yet ... but on the upside i guess my tight budget will give me time to really think about it ... lol ... thanks for the kind words and the encouragement ... ive actually had the boat 6 yrs now ... started work twice and ran out of cash ... but im a lot better off now and im shooting for a spring launch ! i will indeed posst new pics of progress when i have some to show ! my first project is to get the motor running and make sure it is sound before i tackle the rest !

Be careful when you hang that from the rafters, the top on these Glastrons are HEAVY! Just pulling the top off of my boat, I can slide the hull with one arm back and forth on my trailer ( quad bunks ). I'd hate to hear that the roof of your garage now has a slight bow to it from the cap being suspended there for the last 6 months

any time duckee, Hay your going to need glass and poly or epoxy, I know your in Ohio , if you cant find it there let me recomend US Composites .com they treated me great, even called me when I ordered thick epoxy when I should have ordered thin , thought that was perrty cool , not many places do that anymore !! plus they have the best prices and quick shipping !! I could get the west system from a guy here but he was over 200 dallors more then what i got from them !! Ok just thought i would give you the heads Up on that one !!! john

OOOOHHH Yea Duckee i hear yea , money is really tight here too , last year we were spending 60 or 70 bucks on gas and now its more like 140 a week !! and everything else !! plus the wife lost her on call pay !! thats a 1000 a month gone !!! so I hear yea , i was planning on having mine boat down two months ago !!!! [ this week it will be able to hit the water, not going to hit the seats till this winter and paint also ] BUT I WILL HIT THE WATER BY SAT, lol I hope !!!!! lol
Get your wood one of the frist things , you have to get it drying !! home depot has a mask for 20 some bucks !! and a few of them suits would really be a good investment !! Ok keep us posted !! John

agreed ^^^^^^^^^

good on you john....post picks of the madien voyage.

as far as the laundry mat...thats where the really bad stuff goes....ask the attendant what machine to use...they uasually have one for the really bad stuff.

tyvec suits are a must....if you like sleeping with your wife....long sleeve shirts....no exposed skin....wear a full hat or the hood of the tyvec. it really makes a difference.....

do you have a harbour freight there?...i hear you can get grinders cheap there.
