70 Horse Rude, lower unit shifter disconnect?

HelloWorking on a 70 horse rude of 1970's perhaps? It has mechanical shift and I cant figure out where to disconnect the shifter to finish pulling the lower unit?Any help please?Craig

Located under the bottom carb, is the top of the shift rod. Without knowing your engine particulars, the shift rod linkage should disconnect from there somehow. (either a shoulder bolt through the shift rod, or two plates with a pin going through the rod).

Hi Craig,<br /> The disconnect should be a bolt, 7/16-head, accessed under the bottom carburetor. You'll need a 1/4-inch drive socket wrench with a long exension to reach it. Remove the bolt - it is threaded near the head and smooth at the tip to engage the shift rod.<br /> Later models have a snap clip that removes to loosen the shift linkage.<br />- Scott

That worked fine. Now, what about getting the prop shaft seal out? Ive been poking at it with a pick but it doesnt want to budge. Any hints?Thanks again!!!!Craig

Oh, I found the four bolts and took out the bearing holder jobby. Found fishing line on either side of the seal! That should be it for the questions... Thanks a bunch!Craig

If you dont want to pull the carrier, dealers have a tool that removes the seals and then can install new ones without removing the lower unit or the bearing carrier. The whole thing doesnt take more than 20, maybe 30 minutes, at the most.
