having a nightmare with my new toy. 78 vintage engine, 130psi compression, good spark, carbs have been cleaned, starts and runs fine in yard on muffs.Problems start on the water! Engine starts ok and runs at fast idle out of marina, it will then run ok indefinitely untill it is stopped - Engine is on a 14 foot speedboat and apart from a slight hesitation on take up, ran perfectly for 2 hours on friday nite with my family kneeboarding. Once stopped for 10 minutes,or left to idle,it will die and not re start. By using the cold start lever to get some revs i can sometimes get the engine to fire and run at high revs, but when reducing revs the engine dies before i can get it in drive. Eventually it is sometimes possible to get the boat away - very sluggishly, but once away she performs flawlessly again untill stopped or left to idle! this has been a very frustrating weekend and summer is fading fast here in UK. Im convinced from the fact that the thing goes great that it is something minor - please help guys!!! thanks steve

Re: 70 HP Evinrude Dies

Steve my old 85 did this very same thing and I discovered I had a float in the top carb flooding the engine when coming down to slow speed or sitting at idel.
Might be worth looking into.

thanks bubbakat - i have stripped and checked all 3 carbs and floats and seats seem ok, also motor will run indefinitely in yard on flushmuffs - would i be looking for a damaged seat/needle or a damaged float?
thanks steve
