70 hp evinrude falls flat on its face

i just bought a tracker with a 70hp evinrude on it.took it out today ran fine had it full throttle then it fell flat on its face played with the throttle for a bit turned it off then started it an ran fine then did it again.i did notice that ran rough for a bit on idle an it spit alittle but not really bad.can someone please send me in a right direction to maybe fixing this problem please thanks ed

Bolts broke on the transom

I'm assuming you mean it won't plane out your boat? What's the previous maintenance history, things you have tried?

the boat will plane out.it will go good for like 3mins then shuts down but idles fine. when i run it full bore it goes good then it seems to go it noting but a rough idle when i bring the throttle back to low rpms

Have you checked the temp of the motor when it does this

I could be starving for fuel. First thing to check is the fuel pump. If your boat only runs fine when you hold pressure in the fuel system by manually squeezing the bulb, it generally means you have a fuel pump issue. If that checks out ok, I would be inclined to check out the carbs. A rebuild of the carbs would be a good idea at this point.

it helps to know the year and model. This motor may have a temperature switch that protects it from overheating

its a 1990 tracker evinrude 70hp

I'm pretty sure that motor has S.L.O.W, sensor in the back of the head detects overheat and slows down RPM till it cools off.

took it out today an the same things happen get going along an it just die but idles ok.when it happenend i pulled both brown wires off 1 at a time an nothing pumped the gas prime an nothing new plugs before all this.shut off engine for a bit an it ran fine again for like 3 min if that any more ideas?

Check compression and check spark, 2 good starting points.

Just read another post where a 91 70hp had the same symptoms, the guy ran it at night and found a wire/coil arcing.

took it out again same thing happen check the compression it was fine 105 on all 3 cly.checked coils to see if they got hot am the where fine.gas line look good.im thinkin the power pack?

Believe it or not,if youre using an old bulb/pump primer hose if it has any leaks at all it will do exactly what youve stated,also an unvented fuel tank will get an airlock,hope its that simple.

i does have a bulb/primer but it all looks well and is not that old?cant spot any leaks.

I had the same problem with my Tracker Evinrude 2 stroke. This is what I did and it solved the problem:

Pump out as much fuel as possible out of the tank with the bulb, use that fuel for your mower or truck. Put fresh fuel in. Use Evinrude 5+2 fuel treatment. Remove inline fuel filter and install a water seperating fuel filter in the back bay compartment. Last, decarb motor with Evinrude Engine Cleaner. Then get a factory OMC service manual and do a link and sync.

thank you everyone for your help on evinrude 70hp.it turned out to be water i the gas.each bowl had just a speak of H2O.cleaned carbs drained off all gas new fuel filter new 2 stroke mix an some seafoam did wonders thanks again peaked out at 5800rpms ran mint at 5500 thanks again for your help Ed tracker12546
