The keyway has sheared and was wondering if any
Other damage could have happened .i know it has
no valves but ? Also what caused this ?carb issue ?/
timeing ? Fuel is fresh and mixed correct or is it
possible we did not tighten the flywheel nut correctly when new
Stator was installed

If the key has shared the most possible issue is that the nut was not tighten to right torque value.
Another possble thing is a back fire.

Clean the grove in the crank taper and lap the taper with valve grinding compound such as Carborundum.
Install a new key and torque the nut to spec. value.

85# is what I believe they suggest.

Also nothing can cause the key to shear??
New boat.1988
Went out one day shortly after getting the boat.
Fished and tried to start the second motor.NOPE!!
Luckily we had 2 .
Found the key sheared, didn't backfire, didn't hit anything ??
Just sheared??
Follow Nordins suggestions.
Check the inside taper on the flywheel for damage.
