Hello everyone, I just bought my first boat, It is a 16ft Traveler aluminum boat and the motor is a 1996 70 hp Force. I'm having the following problem.

The motor starts fine, but sometimes when I put the boat in gear and give it gas it immediatly stalls.... but will fire right back up. After five or six attempts, it will throttle up normal. It seems to want to do this AFTER being stopped for the first or second time. Also the motor seems to idle a little rough.

I hope I have given enough information for you, if you need more just let me know. I'm new to boat ownership, and don't know what to do.

Thank you in advance, and I look foward to talking with you all.

Jody

Re: 70 hp force stalls in gear....

Hi Jody, wecome to iboats.

Do you have the serial number handy?
Reason I ask is that the 70hp was made from 1991-1995.
Starting in 1996, it was a 75hp.

Does your boat have a tach?
Idle should be 700-800.

Most likely senario is a fuel pump diaphram that is starting to fail.

This is what happens, caused in part by age, and in part by the blended fuels that the government has mandated we use over the last 10 years.

You start and run the engine, fuel pressure pumps fuel to the carb.
When you shut the engine down, the accumulated pressure causes the fuel to leak into the powerhead/block. This causes a flooded condition when you try to start the engine again.

Its a simple fix. A fuel pump rebuild kit costs between $10 and $17, depending on where you shop. If you buy one from a Mercury dealer, it should come with an instruction sheet.

Tools needed, screw driver, utility knife, wrench, wire cutter. ??
Takes about a half hour.

Need to correctly identify your motor, or atleast the fuel pump.
There were 2 versions.
1 was square.
The other consisted of 2 round humps.
Follow the fuel line under the engine cover, it should lead you directly to the fuel pump on the starboard (drivers) side.

Any questions, just ask.

Re: 70 hp force stalls in gear....

Roscoe, thanks for the reply. I checked the motor and the serial number is OE124713...the guy I bought it from bought it from his friend and said the motor was a 96 model. I may have to have a talk with him...

The boat does not have a tach, and I think the fuel pump is square.

If the boat is flooding out, why does it always start right back up? I'm sorry for the stupid questions, but I have limited knowledge of engines.

Thanks again,
Jody

Serial numbers through OE138599 were 1995 models. No big deal.
Yes, you should hav e a square fuel pump on that motor.

It will start when flooded like this, but it will not be able to accellerate.

I also have a 1995 70hp Force. I rebuilt my fuel pump in 2001.
I am going to do it again next week, as preventative maintenance.
The alcohol in the blended gas dries out the diaphram and causes it to get brittle and crack, or it may develope pinholes first.

Time to go visit your friendly Mercury dealer and get the kit.

Good luck.

Keep us posted on the results.
