I have no water coming out of pee tube..Pulled lower unit off, checked impeller cleared away alot of debrit..replaced everything and no pee stream..I keep reading about a "woodruff key " for the impeller..What is this and what does it look like? Could my t-stat be bad? Its a year old.. how would I know if it is going out? Thanks for your help?

Matt

Matt, the woodruff key is a little peice of metal that slips into a slot on the shaft that the impeller slips over, it locks the impellers position on the shaft, without it the shaft will spin and the impeller will do nothing.

you should probably inspect the water pump again to veriify its there, its not very big and easily overlooked ;)

The woodruff key holds the impeller onto the drive shaft, there is a cutout inside the brass housing of the impeller and also on the driveshaft, the woodruff key is used here to make the connection, the service book should show a photo of how it goes together!

excellent!! I will pull it again..Thats makes total sense..I pulled the t-stsat and put the water hose up to the hole that the t stat goes into and water was circulating throught the pee hose and also throught the intake vents at the bottom of the lower unit. so everything is flowing just not when the motor is running which water doesn't pump without the impeller moving and it can't move unless it is locked to the drive shaft..Got it!! I still have alot to learn, but this forum has been wonderful..I read it all the time, and you guys were so fast..Its nice to be able to post a question, go work on the boat for a little bit and when I come back for a break, there is usually an answer to my question..

Now, when I pulled the t-stat out I noticed that it had "36 HP" on it..Is this bad being that I have a 70 hp motor?? Is that woodruff key something I could just get at the local boat store? So the key is basically just a pin? It must have dropped down in the lower unit when I removed the impeller..I never heard a clank or anything, but maybe it will be in there..Thanks guys..i'll let ya know if this solves it!!

The woodruff key is kinda half moon shaped & about 3/16" thick, OMC p/n 0334897, it also comes with the impeller kit p/n 0432954. The correct t'stat assy. is p/n 0394409

Hope that helps ;)

While you have the lower unit off I would suggest that you go ahead and replace the impeller - especially since you found it full of trash.

great....Well, that fixed it..I found the woodruff key on the ground near where the boat is now..Man, that thing is small..Just a piece of rubber..Pulled everything back apart and installed it..Works perfect!!! Power head still seems a little hot to the touch after idling for a few minutes on water hose muffs..T-stat may need replacing like you said..Where can I purchase parts with those model numbers? Thanks again guys!!

Rule of thumb for temp is you should be able to hold your fingers on the head for about 3 seconds before you have to remove them, it will get to that point within a couple of minutes, so you may be alright, but changing the t-stat can't hurt.
