I have a 1974 70 hp Johnson Stinger. I bought it a year ago and I ran it for a couple minutes. It has been sitting for a year and now will not run. It will start and run if I choke it every few seconds. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using fresh gas and oil mix?

yep, they're all probably right. You very possibly have trash in the carb. Your float or needle valve in carb could be sticking. You need to make sure you are getting gas to carb. This can be done by disconnecting the fuel line from carb then turning over engine to see if there is a pulse of fuel from the fuel line which should be caught in a glass jar so you can inspect what it is spitting out. If it is not spitting out perfectly clean gas you need to clean the system from one end to the other. I agree with many others I've read on several message boards... the worst thing for an outboard (or about any motor for that matter) is to let it sit for any length of time without new gas being run thru it. I'm currently trying to run out 6 gallons of 3 year old gas from a newly acquired 1992 waverunner. Once you feel comfortably sure it is as clean as it is going to get without a rebuild you will be wanting to adjust or reset your idle screws.

I remember a guy back in '75 that had a 70 stinger shortshaft on about a 14' check mate type of boat. (can't remember the make) The thing I do remember is the rooster tail that motor would leave behind, it was awesome! I was 15 at the time and just loved speed (still do!). You got a classic! It's orange and black right?
