70 HP Lower unit compatability

Will the lower unit from a 1980 70 HP Johnson fit a 1988 model 70 HP? The powerheads are very different. Thanks

They should , the difference being some models ..the shift rod works opposite one pulls to go forward the other will push to go forward ...you can ck this with the units in the off posistion..off the mtr,,,you can also switch up the linkage under the powerhead ..lots of work...

there are different splines in some yrs too,my instinct tells me it fits,but,hopefully one of the other gurus will give a solis answer
