I ahve a 1967 or 1970 70 hp johnson sea horse. We went to start the motor yesterday with the ear muffs and it woould start right up with the idle control switch on the remote shift box in the start position but would rev really high. We removed the motor from the boat a year ago for a complete floor and stringer rebuild (never again will i do this). How do i adjust the throttle. On the carb there is a cam that is actuated by the throttle cable and it has 2 marks on it and one says start and the other saya nothing but they are pretty close together. I dont think this high rev is normal. Any suggestions? I've been staring at this boat for a year and really want to get it out on the water for some well deserved R&R.

Thanks in advance,

Model J70ELCNB

That model number would be a 1982 70hp. I guess I'm not really clear on your problem though. My controls do not have a start position, just a warmup throttle lever. Could you please explain further?

First mark is where the throttle plate's should start to open, second mark is where throttle plate's will be in start position, plate's parially open.

The two marks you are describing are most likely the timing advance.

Read the faq section for link n sync procedures, hope you have a manual also. need service manual.

Somewhere in the vicinity of this you will see an idle setting screw, also you may need to adjust your throttle cable at the engine so it allows the throttle advance to fully close.

Re: 70 HP sea horse throttle problem

the problem is when i test drove the boat it did not have this high rev starting problem. When we removed the motor we did so with a lift and taped the cables so the adjustment thub wheel on the control cables would not move. My logic is that if the control cables go back into the exact same position on the engine as they were when they came off and were working with no problems i should not have any problems. The motor will not start without that idle lever on the shift box in the start position. I have checked the choke and it isint sticking. I'm outa ideas. should i mess with thos thumb wheels on the shift and throttle cables? Other than a new steeinr cable that supposed to be here on friday this is the only thing keeping me from goin fishing. I hope this helps.

Was the motor left with the hood off for an extended time while you repaired the boat? I guess the first thing to check, is the ignition trigger moving freely, then is the throttle pivot that the cable hitches to returning all the way to the stop screw. If the timing isn't coming all the way back, the motor will run fast, especially on muffs. Timing is all you set the idle with, the carbs are to be completely closed at idle.

the engine will start but will not idle, it revs really high after it starts so we have to shut it off. It should start at high revs and when the Idle lever is in the start position but when its moved out of the stary position the motor chokes out. It was stored in a shed with the cover on. I will have to check to see if the arms moved by the throttle and shift cabels return all the way to the stop

you may have the cables reversed, check by having someone push throttle lever at remote control while you observe the cable movement at motor, the first cable to move should be the shift control.

as guy 74 mentioned, check the timing plate ,which is under the flywheel, there should be a small linkage from the throttle arm to it,connected by plastic ball and sockets.undo your cable and manually operate the throttle to insure all linkages are moving properly.you might have the timing plate stuck in full or partial throttle,it should move freely

qoute (We removed the motor from the boat a year ago for a complete floor and stringer rebuild (never again will i do this).

the engine sat for a year? did you have stabil or any other type of fuel presertative in the gas when you stored it?

how did you store it?

starts in high idle but dies in normal position??

sounds like carb rebuild time, dirt or varnish in carbs from sitting over a year.

HOw are you starting thwe engine? On muffs or in a barrel?

If on muffs it will idle higher than in the water as no back pressure on the exhaust side.
