Hi guys (& gals),

I just picked up a Johnson 70 hp Seahorse from my brother-in-law, it's been laying in his shed for about 15 years, he remembers dropping the lower unit to replace the impellor or something but never put it back together. Needless to say we can't find the bolts. Does anyone know what size bolts I need to put it back together? Also, how I can find out what year it is?
Thanks in advance, T- byrd

Look for a 1" X 3" +/- rectangular plate on the transom bracket with the model and serial number. If it is missing, look on the engine block for a nickel-sized convex aluminum welch plug with the model number.

Once you have the model number, you can navigate to your motor's gearcase diagram for the part numbers of the six bolts that you will need. Just click the parts diagram in the upper right corner: http://shop.evinrude.com/

You can use the following archive to find the year of your motor once you have a model number: http://web.archive.org/web/20011223002417/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/jomodyr/JHP70.html

Hi Ezeke,

Thanks for the very quick reply!
I was able to find both the plate; Model # 70EL77S, & the plug # 388154.
I followed the link but there was no exact match, there was 70EL77-70ETL77 but none with the S, so I assume it's a '77. I can't find anything with the # 388154 off the plug.

Following the other link I reach only model # 70773S 1977, I measured the housing and found it to be 15" so I guess I'll go with those specs.

Off to the shop tomorrow to see if they have any bolts this size.

Thanks again for your time and advice, T-byrd

Your model number 70EL77 has a trailing letter S indicating a change within the model year or a factory run during the year.

When using the parts catalog link, you need to change from Evinrude to Juhnson in the first drop down window- the number 70773S is the Evinrude version of the same motor with different paint and decals.

388154 should be the Serial Number for your specific motor, but serial numbers in that year were larger -in the millions - so you are either missing a number or the engine may be a replacement engine.

When buying parts from a dealer, it is best to give both model and serial numbers in case there was an upgrade during the model year.

Wow! You are quick & good!
The serial # below the model # on the plate is J4795421.
I followed the links as per your suggestions and there it was under Johnson!
Thanks again, what a great help! T-byrd
