70 HP throttle problem

I bought this boat used. Had a 40 Merc on it which I hated,,,had no way to start it except at idle speed, which was very hard to do....no way to increase the RPM from idle without putting it in gear....a real hassle every time i put it in the water....started and ran great after it was warm but a major ordeal right off the trailer. SO...about 4 yr ago I swapped out an older (white cowling) 70 Johnson for the Merc. It has a little lever that allows increasing the RPM while in neutral. Problem solved. Now that assembly has worn out I think. I have NO sensitivity in the throttle control. Once in gear, I have to push the throttle almost all the way forward to get RPM to go up and practically tear the thing off its mounting pushing so hard forward to get full speed...didn't used to be like that. I had my mechanic, who is a smart guy, good mechanic, and a fisherman/boat owner, look at it and he says it is worn out and unable to be adjusted to fix that problem.
FINALLY the question....WHAT IS THE BEST/EASIEST/CHEAPEST WAY FOR ME TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?
Thanks for looking and input!

Re: 70 HP throttle problem

Could be as simple as a throttle cable adjustment. Might also need to replace the throttle cable if it is stretched or the casing is split. Might need to replace the controls and cables if they are really worn out.

Thanks. I don't think an adjustment is possible....at least to extent that it wold fix this. Is it hard to replace the throttle cable? Is that a DIY project? and where can I get stuff like that?

Iboats sells everything you need. If your going to keep this boat and work on it yourself you need to get a omc manual. Try ebay, I got the one for my motor for 25 bucks.

If this was my boat , I would disconnect the cables from the motor and see if they were still stiff. Sounds like you got stuck cables but you said you had a machanic look at it and it is the control box. Again, try ebay, you should be able to find one for about a 100 bucks. Good luck and let us know how you fixed it.
