I have a '70 Mercury 1150, sn: 2840981.
I had a reverse lock problem. When I was backing off the trailer the motor would lift out of the water. I had also had a problem with water getting into the lower unit, so I replaced the shift shaft oil seal bushing assembly. After examining the diagram of the parts break out, I determined that I had installed the bushing assembly incorrectly. I had put the rubber washer on the bottom instead of the top. This was preventing the shaft from being able to push up, because the "e" ring was being stopped at the washer, instead of being able to travel up into the bushing.

So, this weekend I took the lower unit down again to reinstall the assembly correctly. Now my "newbie-ness" really shows. I turned the prop while reinstalling the lower unit. I performed the test to see if it was installed correctly:
In all gears, the only movement was a clockwise rotation, no ccw rotation, like Forward. How can I fix this???? From my reading it sounds like it may be my clutch dog is out of place. If so, can this be fixed without disassembling the LU?
Remember, everything worked before I replaced the bushing, so something is out of alignment, I hope.Forward gear - No counterclockwise rotation
Neutral - free rotation either direction
Reverse gear - 1/3 turn either direction
