703 contol

Ive recently aquired a small boat with a 84 30hp yamaha. The motor is running fine and starts right up. Im not sure if it is wired correctly though. The plug coming from the 703 control box (1 green, 1 yellow, 1 black) the green wire is wired directly to the positvie on the battery. Looking at the wiring diagram this doesnt look right. But i get no power at the engine without it. Any Ideas?

Green is the tach lead from the rectifier. Having to hook it to postive says there is a problem with the electrics or wiring. Not sure why you would need to feed a postive voltage back to the rectifier. It should be getting the 12volts from the rectifier.
