Okay I have had this boat for about a week and been messing with it non stop. Here is what I have tried:

Purged all the fuel lines and tank put in fresh 50:1 mixed gas (I accidently bought 89 octane with the ethanol but didn't figure it would matter and plan on getting it without ethanol next time)

It already has brand new plugs, new starter.

I have been able to occasionaly get it started up but only will stay running at full throttle.

I thought it was getting a weak spark so I bought a 12 volt coil with a built in resistor, condensor, coil wire, and different plugs but couldn't get it to fire at all so I put the old parts back on. I still was having bad luck but I don't know if its a contact breaker point behind the rotor in the distributor but it rubs the lobe on the shaft. It wasn't opening so I adjusted it closer and it seems that it had fixed my problems. I was able to fire it up rev it idle it and then I shut it down and tried a few minutes later and having the same luck as before.

I believe the timing is correct but I don't have a timing light. I did observe that with the number 1 piston at tdc the flywheel was at 0 degrees and the distributor mark was facing the flywheel.

If anyone has any ideas of where to go from here let me know. I starting to consider just selling the motor for whatever I can get out of it and buying a cheap smaller engine that is guaranteed to run on. I really wanted to get this engine running though because its all hooked up with a steering wheel and power tilt trim (need to replace the electric motor). I don't have alot of money to throw at this.

I'm guessing 70 Hp Chrysler??How long ago did it run?If it's set for any length of time the carb/carbs probably has lots of gunk in it/them.
You probably need to clean them. The main jet has small holes in them they need to be cleaned.Check the fuel pump diaphram.Should be fairly flat and no holes.
What kind of electrical starting system do you have?Posta few pics that way we can identify it.
And any other info will help.J

Pull the cap off the distributor and check and see if you have points. If you do clean/re-set the points to .014. The points make a huge difference in spark/fire and running smooth and the gap MUST be dead on. Good luck...

Yes its a 1972 70 Hp Chrysler. Supposedly it ran last year and he said it wouldn't plane out but I am not sure of how much he said was true. I removed the carbs and took the bowls off of them and everything looks really clean so I put it back together. I don't know where the fuel pump diaphram is. I believe that I have Magnapower 1 which has a power pack, coil, then the distributor has a rotor and behind that there is a piece that opens and closes with the lobe of the distributor. The coil wires are copper and the bare wire pushes up into the distributor cap against brass points. I will try to get some pictures on here soon of everything. I kind of ruled out the fuel system because the few times I have removed a plug and grounded it out I couldn't see a spark but it must be getting a spark to occasionally run so I thought maybe it was the weird looking plugs that made it hard to see. I did try putting a normal plug in to see if I could see the spark and still didn't. I really am hoping that I could get this engine running. Thanks for everyones replies.
