70EL77S Long shaft or short shaft??

Hi Just wondering if this Johnson 1977 70 hp is a long shaft or a short shaft. Looking for parts and they keep asking me and I dont know, hoping someone here can help. My guess is a long shaft! But I want to know forsure so no guesses thanks.

I dont think you can tell from the model number. At least they seem to list both standard (15") models and longshaft (20") models against the same number'

Measure it!

Measure from the transom top (or inside the mounting bracket) down to to about an inch or so above the cavitation plate. If you are in the region of 15" then its a standard shaft but if you are round 20" its a long shaft.

Also look at these two diagrams and note the differences in design of the leg (exhaust housing) itself (#46 in the first ,#32 in the second))

The gearcases are also different but not quite so obvious

I think the "L" in the model number claims it to be a long (20") shaft. Of course, someone could have changed that in the last 32 years.
