motor ran good last summer but this summer I never could get her going.I had to get a new battery to start with. Then it would turn over but no spark. Timer base is bad, and rectifier is bad.Only had the motor 5 years so even though it looks o.k. Im replacing the water pump. Dont know what other electronics are bad. Two of the diodes in the rect. are shorted to ground. Could that have messed up the timer base? I hate to replace them ($$$$$$$$) and have them go out again.Any ideas other than checking for voltage on the power pack ground? I havent done that yet.

Re: 70hp / 1983 rude/ cause of bad timer base/rect??

Hi boatin.

The regulator should not have done nothin' to the timer base. The timer base usually goes out from a busted wire or one of the little coils goes bad. The voltage from the timer base is only 2 to 5 volts DC so make sure there is none before replaceing.

Bout' the only way to check the power pack is to crank the engine and measure the output. But if the timer base is bad, can't do this as the power pack needs the timer base to tell it when to fire.

If the diodes in the rectifirer are bad you have no choice but to replace it. Have any idea why it went south?

You might also want to check over the stator for any signs of over heating and check the output of the power coil. This is the coil that supplies the initial voltage to the power pack for ignition. Chances are this could be bad causing the no spark problem.

Keep us posted ....thanks.

Re: 70hp / 1983 rude/ cause of bad timer base/rect??

Thanks Jim,
Im a little confused as I usually am when Im beyond my expertise. My timer base showed a 0 ohm reading. A very helpful dealer let me check a new timer with my meter and it showed the correct reading so I know mine is bad.
I know my rect. is shorted to ground....but I dont know why everything is going bad at the same time....or maybe the rect. went out last year, which accounts for having to get a new batt.
Would you just replace the bad parts and go from there? or should I investigate something else.
P.S. Your last paragraph went completely over my head ......but considering where my head is it wouldnt take much to do that.
Thanks again.

boatin'....ya' need to get yer self a service manual. OEM is preffered. They are still available for your year engine from any Johnny/Rude dealer. Show ya' how to troubleshoot the ignition system step by step. Will pay for itself many times over.
