I have a 73 70HP Chrysler outboard. It starts right up and idles fine. When out on the lake under load it won't won't go much more that 1/4 throttle or so before it kills out. I can take it up higher when using the "muffs" in my driveway.

Any ideas? I'm thinking about chaning the fuel pump diaphram and possibly cleaning out the carbs. I've never cleaned a carburator before so I'm not real sure how to do it.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Ethanol is messing up a lot of motors. It's delaminating the inside of older hoses causing clogs in the carbs and fuel filter.Check for soft hoses and junk in the filter on the motor.Check the diaphram. Then look at the reeds.
To rebuild a carb.Be careful what kind of cleaner you use as some will make the rubber and plastic swell and render it useless.Carb soak will usually ruin all rubber and plastic. If you take it apart and it has varnish in the bowl the main-jet is probably clogged(something to look for). J

Just an update. I pulled apart the carbs and found a piece of something stuck in one of them. It was an easy job and it runs great now.
