I had one of these motors years ago. Was a great motor. I have a new boat that would really work well with a 70 hp motor so I considered the evinrude.. If they stopped using electronic shift what year should I look for . Really want to avoid the electric shift. Thanks

I would stay with a 1980 or later 70 hp most of the carb problems were cleared up by then and were good running motors. The electric shift was discontinued in about 1972/73. I would really recommend 1986 or newer with the 56 cid block it is just a much more powerful motor.

The was never a 70hp with the Hydro-electric Shift, or the Electric Shift. The only year the 70 had the Hydro-mechanical Shift was the 74 model yr. In 75 and later, the 70 had a strictly mechanical shift.
The Hydro-electric shift was a well engineered unit. It shifted very fast, almost eliminating clutch dog wear. Most problems were dirty oil, wrong oil, and as they got older, bad shift switches in the control box and contamination of the oil leading to clogged filter on oil pump

Thanks I thought they were early motors. I know they are very problematic (IMO) I would rather just avoid the electro mechanical altogether. Thanks

There were no electric shift 70 hp 3 cylinder motors marketed.------The hydro-electric shift is wonderfully simple and very reliable too.----Whenever " electric " is mentioned many people assume that it is complicated !!

I have a 1976 70hp and I believe this was the first year of mechanical shift, at least the marketing documentation I have shows the '75 model year as being a hydro-shift unit. I agree with your desire to stay strictly with the mechanical shift, not because the hydro assist units were bad, as it's actually a very durable design, but because of the parts availability issue if you should have a problem with it.

The evinrude and johnson brochures from 1975 both show mechanical shift for the 70hp, the V4s showed power shifts

Nope----1972 was the last year of production of hydro-electric shift motors !!!-------1973 ( 2 / 3 / 4 cylinder ) was the first year of a system called " POWER SHIFT II " and that system was in no way shifted electrically.----This topic never never seems to go away !

"Power Shift" is hydraulically assisted shift. It does not use electricity. It responds to and aids your movement in the same manner that power steering does in your car. Disclaimer: Well OK, make that "most" cars. Many new ones use---get this----Electric power steering!!

Never assumed it was complicated. I have worked on one years ago and thought very little of it so I am trying to make sure to avoid getting another one. But thank for the reply/

Thanks that's the answer I was looking for..

Sorry if I asked a question that some seem overly sensitive to.. Just want to get a motor that I want. Thanks all.

Never be sorry for asking a question. There is just some confusion regarding the various shift systems OMC used in the 60s and 70s
