I have read a lot of posts on the forum about using muffs or a barrel to run an outboard out of the water for cleaning or testing but one thing I could not find in any of the posts was how long you can safely run an outboard this way?

I want to clean my carbs using the seafoam method described in the sticky but I don't have a lake that I could do this at so I thinking about trying to do it in the driveway. What I don't know is, if it is safe to run the motor for 15-20 min at idle on muffs or a barrel. I have a 1977 70hp Evinrude.

No specific limit as long as the motor doesn't overheat.

15 to 20 minutes in a barrel is risky. The water heats up and thus doesn't cool the engine like fresh water that the engine was designed to run in.

hey walker, what birdy told you that?

on my 200hp merc, i can hold my hand directly under the prop in the exhaust water and hold it there....

but.... yes, as long as your motor has water from the muffs, you can run it for 17 years, it doesnt care.

but ive seen guys go inside to get a beer and come out and the muffs had fallen off, or the hose kinked and now they have a 70hp lawn ornament.

Its simple. 85 degree water can absorb more heat than 145 degree water.
Run your motor for 15 or 20 minutes in a barrel of 85 degree water and you will end up with a barrel of 145 degree water and an overheating engine.
