I have a 1987 70HP Johnson - I can push down on top of the cavitation plate and the top of the engine rocks back about 1/2 inch and clunks. The steering arm doesn't move, it appears to be loose where the arm would attach to the engine. It doesn't appear to affect the operation of the boat. . Any suggestions? Major repair task? Thanks in advance

The upper engine mount requires that the power head be pulled. I did mine over a weekend but if you have never done it before buy a manual and see if you are up to the task. The lower mounts are under the plates on each sde of your motor just above the lower unit. 70 HP bouncing around on the transom is not good.

dsloan Hi not sure if the motor is rocking on the motor mount or at the tilt tube. It you look more closly at the tilt tube where the motor pivots about when you pull her up up or down the casting on these motors elongate about this axis. The steering tube / tilt tube won't move its bolt from both sides but the casting that hangs on the transom will ware. I have seen this on alot of motors 15 years or older.<br />steve
