1st, thank you in advance for your help. I have a 1979 Johnson 70hp and the swivel bracket is removed from the outboard. I am trying removing the lower swivel to midsection mount/ clamp. It appears that after the large nut is removed, I would just have to tap on the mount to remove it from the steering bracket splines. It will not come off. Am I missing something(small retainer screw, etc.)or should it just come off of the steering bracket splines. Thank you again

If anyone knows the answer, has a mechanic that they can ask or finds it online, I really appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks

Unless it was strictly a freshwater motor, those lower mounts can get "welded" onto the bottom Splines of the steering arm. I had to carefully cut one off recently, no way at all it was coming off. Removing the swivel bracket can be a ton of work if corroded.

Guys,
I appreciate all of your help. I’ve heated this thing up with a torch, drilled holes in the spacer block between the midsection and powerhead to get PB blaster down into the long powerhead bolts. Motor has good compression but I see a lot of corrosion on the Lower unit and no history. I mean, did the previous owner do engine flushes after every use and the lower is just heavily corroded because it was sitting in saltwater? Probably not. I like doing favors but I can’t stand when someone brings you a piece of crap, when your saving them a ton of money. And to put a motor (that is already under powered in my opinion)with any corrosion and no history on the back of a beautiful 23ft Robalo makes no sense. I think I’m just going to tell him that I wish I didn’t commit to it and to save his money up. #you can’t pull over to the side of the road in a boat.
