70HP Johnson Water Spraying Out of Foot

Helping my buddy replace his water pump on his 1999 Johnson 70HP. I installed a Sierra 18-3389 water pump kit, new plastic fitting, and new hose. Motor is peeing but its not a consistent stream. I have attached a picture. I noticed three locations where water was coming out of. The bracket at the bottom of the steering arm and midsection has water coming out of it and my main concern is water is spraying out the small hole between the midsection and foot. I mean it is jetting out. The water pump kit came with three O-rings. One o-ring was obviously for the water pump housing. But there was a small thin o-ring and a small thick o-ring that I have no idea where they go. The parts diagram for the motor does not show these O-rings. What did I mess? Where do these O-rings go? I am worried the water jetting out of the foot is preventing the full amount of water flowing through the engine and will cause an overheat issue.

Often asked questions.

#1. In the first place, you cannot test a water pump by running on muffs. When doing that, the pump is not pumping, it is only allowing hose water to pass through the pump. So the motor must be tested boat launched and running in the lake.

#2. Water coming out of the lower mount bracket area is normal and intentional. There are large drain holes in there which drain off the water that escaped the pump into the drive shaft isolation tube. If it were not drained off, you would have some serious problems.

#3. This one gets asked all the time. When running, the midsection housing fills up with water. The hole in front drains that water when the motor is shut off and tilted up. Absolutely normal. As for leaking at the seam, same thing, that full housing is simply leaking out. But it is water that has already gone through the engine and done it's job, and is heading back to the lake anyway, so it is harmless. It actually is the same forementioned water that is squirting out the front drain hole. You can seal the seam if it really bugs you, but why bother..it still needs to drain off through that front hole.

I have no clue concerning the integrity or workmanship of the water pump replacement job. You gotta get it in the lake and test it.

EDIT: Arrrrggh, I just noticed the question has already been beat to death in another thread.

Ok thanks! Planning on a test run Friday. I was just worried that the water was leaking and that engine was not receiving proper cooling. And then Murphys law kicks in while we are on a test run and the over heat alarm does not function and my buddies motor blows! I found out that the kit fits a large range of models/years and the O-rings were not needed for this model.

Ran the boat all day yesterday chasing stripers on Lake Murray. No cooling issues. Thanks for the advice
