Oh Man! That is terrible!! I feel for you. You have had a terrible short directly to ground in your main wiring could be in the stator or batt cables,or battery or wiring from stator it is difficult to say.

The trigger broke and I wondering if that was the cause??? The linkage was just hanging off the side. I just bought a new stator/switch box/trigger. Im sure im going to have to replace some wiring too. Is there anything that may be fried?

The stator shown in picture is a CDI stator, was the 2 extra blue/red wires grounded to block? The trigger and switchbox internal rectifier are separate circuits and no way they can interconnect. Check the skag as this could be a lightning strike.

Look for a arc from a lightning strike on the engine

Also why is it that all the wiring diagrams only show 4 wires coming from the stator when there are 6??? there are two yellow going to rectifier. then a solid red and a solid blue going to the switch box. Then I also have a blue with a white line and a red with a white line both grounded. is this correct?

See Fastbullets reply. There shoud not be any wires from the stator that go to ground and this will cause the damage you have. JMO

Re: 70hp mercury ignition meltdown (see pictures)

Check the CDI web site for the correct wireing of the stator for your motor. They have very good Testing and wireing instructions on there. Most usally the extra wires are to be insulated and stored where they will not ground out. On the larger 6 cyclender motors there is usually 2 swithcboxes and the extra wires are ment for that switchbox. If those wires were wired to the mounting screws for the coil pack, as they look like in the photo, The the electricy being made by the stator is going to the engine ground and all the other electrical parts that do have to go to ground. Thus things get fried. JMO

On a CDI stator(which that is the red/white and blue /white go to ground, was that a good ground or could it not have grounded the stator properly and caused a floating short (high voltage)

Cross County 50, you need to get a installation manual or wiring diagram from CDI as you are incorrect
