you see ive marked the spring in mention with an arrow in two locations. I am wondering if the end of this spring is supposed to be hooked under so that the spring is loaded. it seems to me this spring is just flopping back and forth. I am having major issues with throttling up once the engine is running. Once i begin to throttle up, the engine coughs and makes a small backfire and dies....then staring the engine again and this just continues to do this until all of a sudden it will function normal. Wondering if this spring has anything to do with the choke flopping on and/or off?

Well what you are describing is a high speed issue. Can you give us more details and model # and year? Post back and let us know.

Its a 1977 70hp evenrude. It starts just fine....idles nicely.....but when i go to begin to move the throttle, it spits out the exhaust and dies. I have to restart the engine and keep restarting till all of a sudden it will take off just fine. Does not troll that well either without sputtering and then stalling. One thing i have had to do is move the warm up lever and get it to rev and then it seems to clear itself out...so to speak. Not sure why the above person thinks its a high speed issue....but hey..im no boat mechanic.

I can't see your picture. You carbs have fixed jets, no adjustments for either high or low speed. It might be time to overhaul the carbs. Have you checked the compression and spark, either could cause a low speed problem.

According to your first post, What you were describing is a high speed issue. Either way, check compression, spark. Post back and we will try and direct you the best way we can. Without these, it' hard to pin point exactly whats happening. We can only go by what information you give us. And next a year, make, model# along with horsepower would be helpful, That way we can get a better idea whats going on so you can get back on the lake just like us! Post back and let us know!
