Re: 70's Chrysler 130 hp

First three photos are of old style (up to 1978) gearcases. last two are post 1978 engines.
Distributor with points would be early to mid 70s. The owner is correct: iIf the Motorola CD ignition box fails, it can be replaced with a standard coil with just minor wiring changes.
While there is nothing basically wrong with these engines, and while I am a die-hard Chrysler fan, because of their age I stay away from them. They are a difficult resale. I prefer the late 70s-early 80s Chryslers. They have a cleaner design and simply look a bit better.
Props, while still available on ebay are not available from any current manufacturer. Additionally, the props are spline drive with a thrust pin and I never liked that arrangement.
Later Chryslers--after 1978 had a much better lower unit and props are still available--in fact some Mercury props will fit.
The engine block was continued into the Force line with only minor changes so most parts are still available with a little searching.
Power trim and tilt will be "iffy." It is the old three wire motor and probably the old style pump. The internal "O" rings may be at the end of their life. They may last but may also fail almost immediately. First indication will be that the engine will "bleed down" and not stay in a tilted position. However, power tilt/trim units from any 85-140 up to 1990 will retro fit to this engine. The mounting rode do tend to correde into the engine aluminum and become difficult to impossible to remove.
On the plus side, it is a dirt simple engine and easy to work on. No special tools other than a torque wrench, timing light, and a flywheel puller (steering wheel or harmonic balacer puller) are necessary.
Unless you get a really good deal, or if you want it for a period correct engine, you might want to think twice about it.
