Question on what these desiginations mean. My understanding as as follows:

E - Electric Start, Short Shaft

EL - Electric Start, Long Shaft

SS - ?????

Can anyone confirm my understanding of E and EL, and tell what the SS designation is for?

It depends on which models and which years you're referring to.

The first time SS appeared on motor cowlings it stood for Solid State ignition. This came about around 1967.

The second time it appeared was on a few racing models in the 1970s, the 25SS and 35SS. Didn't stand for anything that I know of - perhaps Super Sport? The motors had Quicksilver lower units. Mercury didn't have anything called the "SS" lower unit... Just Quicksilvers (Quickies), Speedmasters, Sportmasters, CLEs, etc...
