'70's lower ends

Will a 1977 85hp lower end mate with a 1971 65hp motor, if the shift rod hight and mid-section are the same? Both Mercs by the way

I had thought the 4 and 6 cylinder motors of those years would interchange. If you 650 is a 4 cylinder, it will work. If not, I do not know that it will. Are the driveshafts the same diameter? Length? Splines?

They are both 4cylinders. I haven't taken anything off, so I'm not 100% on the splines, length, and diameter.

one is a 650 and the other is 850, anybody know if it'll work?

years ago i bought what i thought was an 850. when it went to the shop, it was a 500 on an 850 leg. so i guess it will. but, there other more familiar with the mercs than me.
