70's Mercury 65 jet

I have a 1970's mercury outboard with jet lower unit. Top end is done for and was wondering if I need to have the same size motor to attach the lower jet unit to or if I can look at different sizes to replace on my boat and still use the jet lower end on. Not right now, boat is sitting at my property 1300 miles away, hope to get it back this summer and start my search to find another outboard for it. Just trying to get a headstart on motor search. Thanks
