'71 25hp Lower Unit Compatible

Do lower units from similar year and horspower motors have interchangeable gears?<br /><br />I have a 1971 25hp Evinrude (25102S-E05465)<br /><br />All of the 15-25hp units are the same outside size, can the clutch dog and forward gears be interchanged?<br /><br />I would like to know before I start dis-assembly.<br /><br />Thanks

Welcome to Iboats, Greg.<br /><br />Not the 15hp, but the 18/20/25hp gearcases interchange as a whole over a broad range of years ending in the mid-70s. Sometimes the innards changed slightly though.
