Cant find any torque values for spark plugs in my manual, have them torqued to 20 ft/lbs now is this too much? Also, how do you fill a hydoelectric lower unit properly, have seen conflicting answers, some say tilted others disagree, manual says nothing. Thanks

From the Selco manual :
1971-81 210-246 In/Lbs , 17,5-20,5 Ft/Lbs

After the washer makes contact with the seat, another 1/8 turn is all it takes. 20 ft/lbs seems high and likely to strip threads in the head. As far as the hydroelectric shift, I helped a neighbor and we did it vertically without any problems. Never heard of tilting motor while filling lower unit. Maybe others have more info.

Torque specifications for the spark plugs is 20 foot pounds. However, I never use a torque wrench on s/plugs as tightening them just seems to be a second nature thing.

Filling any lower unit.... the engine needs to be in a vertical running position ie straight up and down. Fill from the bottom drain screw hole until the lube exits the top oil level screw hole.

Thanks Joe, I seldom use a torque wrench either just wanted to be sure. Read a post the other day where someone had a hydroelectric and their manual said to tilt it up to fill it. Also, when I drain and fill it, it doesnt take near as much fluid as the manual says it should.

On the LU oil I recently changed mine,

I kept her tilted down and it was all good. I would suggest buying a pump because the bottles are a real pain to use.

Make sure to get the right kind of oil too i think it is "C" because it is a lighter oil so the solenoid can move and shift.

Replace the oil seals if they are the paper/rubber ones.

fussey is correct with motor down, and fill from bottom. this gets the air pockets out. also you have to have premium blend Type C oil for hydro electric lower unit. do not use regular lower unit oil. available J/E dealers.
