I have a 1971 800 80hp Merc. serial 2990036. The (3) trigger wires coming out of the dist. housing are shot. These wires are almost down to the nub at the housing. Can I cut away some of the rubber grommet to expose more wire? Is there any "slack" inside to pull out?

I'd like to know if I can solder new wires in place? If so, what sort of wire should I use (high temp, gauge, etc)? Is there a special solder I should use? What sort of resistance should I be looking for? Anything else?

Otherwise...are there any good sources for this part (trigger-337-4406A2)? I've been told that if I want to replace it I have to purchase a conversion kit costing around $600

Many thanks, Chuck

You can cut the wires back and solder or crimp and then re-insulate them. There is good product around like a flexible rubber tape that heals and becomes a one piece wrap. Try to keep the wire amp and colour the same or similar.
