Model 60173E with Selectric control. Intial problem discovered when boat would only move very slow and water had gotten into the Gearcase. I removed the gears and found that the notches had been worn down; also the notches on the Clutch Dog were worn. I assume the problem is that the Clutch Dog is not being forced far enough to make correct contact with the gear notches. Question is: what is the cause. Will water in the gearcase cause this? or could the Oil Pump the problem? Is there any way of checking the Oil Pump (list price of $585.00)? I took the gears and Clutch Dog to a welding shop to build the notches back up. Both gears list for $652.00.

You said "what is the cause. Will water in the gearcase cause this? or could the Oil Pump the problem?"<br /><br />The oil pump cannot function properly with water being present. You must use what is called "Premium Blend" gearlube, also known as "Type C", available at your local dealership.<br /><br />You cannot use the HiVis gearlube that the mechanical shift engines use.

Re: 71 Evinrude 60hp-Damaged Gears

Took boat to lake today. When put in Forward or Reverse, the motor dies??? I leave the shifter in the START position when shifting; do I need to increase the rpms before shifting or will this damage the lower unit? When I got home, I put the motor (still on boat) in a 55 gal barrel and when put in gear, it worked just fine. Any suggestion!
