Hello Im trying to get an old boat started ..that sat for 8 years..assuming it is a johnson 50hp model 50esl71s...there is a throtle that when in forward position is the only way to turn over...someone installed three switches on the dash which is supposed to be forward neutral and reverse...cant get it start though as it seems like its working to hard spinnin the prop? is the prop supposed to spin when starting? is there any way to manually put the motor in neutral?..maybe I need to rewire this thing?...geez more work!

That motor (hydo-electric) has to have power to the lower unit and be turning over at a high enough rate of speed to build hydraulic pressure in the lower unit. Forward is the default gear that you motor will be in, so yes, it is going to be in forward until your motor fires off.

yes it will be in fowardtill it git enough power to the nutral cylinoid to activate it. . there shouldnot be any preasure on it to make it spinn slow. check battery and conections . could be a week starter . it takes a lot of amps to turn a outbord motor . if you spin it very long the starter will git hot .it will damage it. i have cranked mine with no power to the foot ran up on the bank. you need a manulto work on this motor 71 thruogh 73 is the same .papasage

i have a similar o/b, you must have a STRONG battery when cranking these electric shifts. let us know what happens.
