I have a 71 50hp electric shift motor. The problem I am experiencing is that the motor won't start with the key switch. I tried jumping the starter motor and it still won't fully turn over. The starter solnoid is good, I have power going from the command centre to the engine...and power from the engine down to the shifting soilnoid in the foot. Could this be the promblem point?? Could the shifting solnoid be fried?? Anyway to test this?

You need to get the starter fixed first. It will not shift without the motor running. It will always be in fwd gear.

if you think its the solenoid. diconnect it and try again. if you still have a problem check and clean all electrical connetions for the starting circuit. also have your battery load tested at a local auto parts store, should be free.

There is a switch on the side of the powerhead, actuated by the throttle linkage. It's purpose is to prevent starting with high throttle settings. Those switches are easilly fried by improper testing or jumping. Ground the wire that goes to the switch and see if it will crank then. If it does, the switch is the culprit.

Can you easily turn the engine over by hand with the plugs out?
