I just rebuilt my first lower unit. I had intended to just re-seal the unit but I found the forward and pinion gears and reverse bearing defective, so I purchased a new reverse bearing and purchased good servicable forward and pinion gears from a local salvage yard. The rebuilt lower unit now has about two hours on it and is working fine - no noises or grinding - and no water is in the oil. But, what I am seeing in the oil is very very small metal particles - looking like "glitter". The particles are too small to even feel. There were a few particles on the magnetic drain plug, but no more than I've seen come from "healthy" motors. So, my question is - could this "glitter" possibly be the three gears (which have never run together as a set before) breaking in new mating surfaces, and if so should I just change the oil every time it is used until it clears up - - or should I break into the unit again? I'm not exactly sure what I'd do if I went into it again anyway - the backlash feels the same after the rebuild as it did before the rebuild.
Many thanks for your help,
Marty

Hi Marty,
Some metal filings in the oil is actually normal, particularly on newly-mated gears. It's not general practice to mix-and-match gears from different sets, but it can be done. Gears are typically pattern matched at the factory so that the gear mesh is cleaner. If you've done the gear lash tolerances correctly and the housing was spotless clean when you reassembled it, you should be alright. Do keep an eye on it though...
- Scott
