I posted my boat in the Starcraft area but it's turned into a restoration so I thought I'd post here.

The deck was shot and the rest of the interior was in rough shape so I started dismantling.

Re: 71 Starcraft Holiday 18ft

I got the dash apart and taken out and removed the floor. Tomorrow I will pull the foam and start cleaning the interior of the hull.

Another avocado green Holiday...nice project:)

You are in the right place for tin can restoration, plenty of good help around here if you have questions.

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet!

The pics of the bow sidewalls are a before and after. I sprayed them with Duplicolor vinyl paint in grey. Actually came out very well.

I removed the foam today and started cleaning the hull. I decided to soak the interior and do a leak test at the same time. There are several rivets and the cap in the bow leaking. There are also several spots around the seam where the stern attaches.

Will Gluvit be enough to fix this or should I replace the rivets? Will it seal the seams or is there something else I should use for them?

I removed the foam and spent the rest of yesterday cleaning the hull.

If the leaky rivets are noticeably loose I would try to rebuck them. If they aren't and are just seeping a little, I would think Gluvit would seal them up just fine.

Just an idea but if you're planning on replacing your dashboard wood, I used a PVC trim board from Lowes for this on my Jupiter and it worked great. Easy to work with and will never rot.

I saw your mention of that in another thread. I went to Lowes and looked for the board you're talking about but couldn't find it and the staff person I asked didn't even know what pvc board was (not surprised). What department did you find it in because I would really like to use the pvc rather than wood.

PVC Board should be found in the Lumber Dept. where you would find Decking Materieal. it is Plastic and looks like Wood decking Boards but made out of PVC plastic.

Re: 71 Starcraft Holiday 18ft - UPDATE and Question

I've been working and have not disappeared. I'm posting some pics of the current state with a question about the dash cover.
The original dash cover was luann with a vinyl cover. It was mostly rotted when I took it off and I've been trying hard to find some sort of plastic to use as the cover rather than wood. No luck so far unless I want to spend a few hundred dollars for much more material than I need. Has anyone come up with a good DIY solution that I might be able to get through one of the warehouse stores?

This is a Holiday but I preferred the SS dash setup so I rebuilt it in that style. Had to cobble together the aluminum trim to get it to match but I think it looks good. The step column is much sturdier than the original. I'm on a very limited budget so I went with the porch paint to protect the wood. I can repaint as needed and it should last until I finish my PhD and can afford a proper restoration.

Re: 71 Starcraft Holiday 18ft

Forgot to mention part of the reason for my slow going. I was headed out to do some research with my son and someone decided to run a stop sign, crossing in front of us. We were not hurt although I t-boned the other truck and he had a couple broken ribs. His vehicle ended up in a field, rolling a couple times. Took us a few weeks to find a replacement tow vehicle so I got behind on boat resto and my research.

What was it that you were driving. It's hard to tell from whats left of it. It looks like it did it's job of protecting you.

It was an Isuzu Trooper. I was doing 60mph towing a 14' boat. There was no intrusion into the cabin but my airbags didn't fire. I haven't found out yet but I think they were removed and I wasn't told when I bought the vehicle.

 To walk away from a 60 mph crash is pretty amazing. Glad that nobody was seriously injured, including the other driver. (ribs hurt but will heal)

And if you used an enamel outdoor primer before painting your wood it should last plenty long. Even if you didn't it should be ok for a while unless you have water soaking on it.
