Nice old motors. I believe this is the model that had the single wall leg on it.
You can actually get generators for these motors. It's not a real cheap investment, but a generator and a voltage regulator will set up a charging system in your boat. I actually did it on an older 40 that I had. I bought all my workings at a salvage yard.
Sounds interesting..I have found an old guy with a treasure trove of old boats, motors, parts etc...If you could give me an idea what to look for I'll take a trip out to see him...Thanks
You'll want the flywheel (with the belt drive teeth in it), the belt, generator (which mounts on the left side of the motor, opposite of the starter and a voltage regulator. Your wiring harness may possibly already be wired for the charging system.
Go to the electronic parts catalog at http://shop.evinrude.com/ Select "OB Accessories" from the drop-down box where it defaults to Evinrude. Then 1972 (as far back as they go). Then "Generator Kit Electric Starting 40hp". You will see all the required goodies.
There really isn't a reason to have a generator on those motors. They do not require a battery to run; the battery is only used for the starter. A charged up deep-cycle will be good for a weekend of constant boating..
He is correct, it won't. Had the same engine (40153g)
Charge at home before you go. That's the last thing you do w/ a boat before you leave home. If it won't start, no need to ruin your day MORE than finding out before you slip over the 2" ball!!!!
