Well, it's ruined!!!! I'm sooooo mad! I've spent so much time on this thing. I finally had it just about done and running good. See that little dimple in the middle of the picture? That's the bottom of the exhaust housing. One of the bolts holding on the lower unit actuially pressed up through and made a pin hole in the housing. I'm screwed! Unless there's some way to seal that hole up, I'll need a whole new exhaust housing. UGH!! I think I'm done! What a waste!

Here's a better picture of the crack. Is this something that can be JB Welded? Or what about putting some kinda sealant up inside the bolt hole and then use a shorter bolt for LU? The bolt is what cracked it when tightened down. When I took LU off the entire inside was covered with grey oil....everywhere. All over everything. WP, shift rod, water tube everything. Would that be because of the crack??

Fill it back up and see where it leaks. If its in the hole just jb weld the top of the hole like you said and use a shorter bolt

Bosunsmate.....fill what up? The cracks in the top of the lower flare of the exhaust housing. Just above where LU and WP bolts up. One of the 4 bolts holding the LU cracked it.

This is what the inside looked like after running in barrel. Normal?? Oil everywhere. Even leaking out a hole in side. IDK!

I dont get where you mean the crack is, zoom out.
If you a worried about a leak. is it not gear oil?
Have you checked your gear oil?

My LU is a bolt short holding it up, if thats your concern i wouldnt scrap it over that

Hi White. You're fine. The innards of the LU are supposed to be covered with grey goop, particularly if you've been running in a test tank. These old 2-strokes dump quite a bit of unburnt fuel/oil into the water when mixed with the exhaust gasses in the LU. However, as long as there was no water intrusion into the gear case and the motor continually pumps water, you'll be fine. Just part of the "charm" of owning a vintage motor. They don't call 'em "2 smokes" for noting. If you post a long shot of your motor we can take a look at it just to make sure all is well.

kfa4303......that makes me feel better. About the grey poop anyway. The crack.....I'm worried. Here's a better picture. I have the LU off. Down at the bottom i scraped away the paint where the crack is. One of the LU bolts came up through. That's weird. Why would they be long enough to breach the housing? Anyway, hopefully I can JB Weld it. Whatcha think? photo (1).jpg

That hole creates absolutely no problem. JB Weld it, paint over it and forget it.

Why did it breach the housing?..... Wrong bolt my friend.

Wow! That's great news. I'll just dab a bit of JB Weld on it then. No, same bolts original ones. They're all the same length. Maybe I tightened it too much. How tight do they gotta be?

Agree with Joe..............The housing was most likely corroded in that area.

Just before they break.... Stop! :)

Some of those models use two different length bolts (front/back). Some of those older long exhaust housings have the threaded holes clear thru.... sort of like Forest Gump's chocolates.
