Hi guys I just bought an old jon boat to take my boys out for the weekend on. Let me give you the story and what I have fixed so far.

Problem: The engine would sputter and sometimes die. run hard sometimes and others would barely accelerate. adjusting the choke in or out would allow me to dial in a little more power.

Problem: by the end of the day I could not get the engine to run. It would turn over and then die.

Problem: The connection from the fuel line to the engine was no good because when I squeezed the bulb fuel would spray out of the connection. During the one day I had the boat on the water the connection kept falling off and the boat would die which means it was sucking in air instead of fuel.

Repair: I took off the card soaked it for a few hours in carb cleaner and put it back on. Honestly it wasn't looking bad when I took it off. SO the carb has been cleaned

Repair: I completely bypassed the fuel line connection to the engine and ran the hose out of my gas tank straight into the fuel pump or filter (don't know what it is) regardless I have a good connection of fuel to my engine now and fuel is not spraying everywhere when I squeeze the bulb.

After all of these repairs I started the engine this morning and it sounded clean without sputtering for about 5-10 seconds before it died. when it started it idled really high. . . . scared me. before it would sputter and idle high. now it idled high with no sputtering and backfiring.

FINALLY MY QUESTIONS : )

1. Does it need to be in the water to run and that is why it died immediately?

2. Is the fuel air mix screw the long adjuster that comes out of the top of the carb and connects to the knob on the front of the engine allowing you to adjust without taking the top case off the engine?

3. Could it be that my fuel/air mix screw is simply way off adjustment. I did play with it when i took the carb apart. Was trying to figure out what it was. I have no idea how many turns in or out it was to start.

I am used to working on motorcycles but this is my first boat engine and things just look different.

Make sure you have it in a bucket w/impeller housing covered w/water, and it spits out water when you're running.
Low speed needle jet should be 3/4 to 1 1/4 out from gently seated I believe.
You have points/coils under flywheel. Dirty points can make a motor act mighty strangely.. Check the top secret file at the beginning of this forum.
