I bought is ob three years ago and when bought it had 15% lower compression on the top cyl. I inspected thru the spark plug hole and saw some scaring on the cylinder wall... maybe caused by a previous overheating problem or incorrect fuel /oil ratio. This engine has run very good for the past three years... finally it is starting to run ruff , and upon running a new comp. ck i have noticed that the compression is now 25% lower comp. Its time for a rebuild... i want to use wiseco piston kits for the building of this powerhead, but untill i pull the head and mic. the cylinders i will not know weather i will be going .20,.30 or.40 over I noticed the 35 hp johnson has the same specs and piston pns , my question is do i need to rejet the stock carb at the high speed fixed oriface or is the 35 hp carb. larger. I rebuilt a 35 hp seahorse about 10 years ago in miami and had great luck!! i just cant remember if the carb size in millimeters was larger. I paid 200.00 dollars for the motor and have enjoyed it for three years..... The coast to rebuilt it myself is around 550.00 dollars, thatincludes pistons, rings, crank seals, wrist pins , and boring the cylinders.... The carb question is what is baffling me ,... can i use a drill index to oversize the jets or order a few sets??? When we built hondafour motorcycles we used the drill index method, then checked the mixture by using new sparkplugs ... checking for lean or rich mixture ,then sync. the carbs. ant tips or help in this matter would greatly be appre. thks Bruce

Hi, Bgeo.

Hard to determine what your question is.

If it is, "Can I get more power by enlarging the jets?" the answer is no.

If you change the breathing of the engine you may need to change the jets to get optimum mixture.

More fuel means more power only if there is more air to go with it.

Good luck. :)

Hi Bruce,
If you've got the correct year information, then your motor CANNOT be made into a 35hp in any way shape or form. Your motor is based on the old 18hp 22-cubic inch powerhead, which was already stretched at 25hp. The later 25/35hp motors are a larger bore. I wouldn't concern yourself with getting more than the rated power, as you'll be sacrificing reliability and longevity...
- Scott
