I started this motor briefly when I got it and it ran but was rough and would not stay running. I rebuilt the carbs and now it will not start at all. I can spray starter fluid in it and it will start for a few seconds. However, i have to spray it and let it sit and aerate and then it will go for a few seconds and then die again. I am using a drill to crank it and without ether I get nothing. I have fuel to the carb. I have adjusted the upper and lower jets. I have put the top at 11/2 and the bottom at 1 and vice-versa. I have then adjusted out and in both to pretty much every combo and I get absolutely nothing. I am stumped. I have good spark, compression is good and pressure builds in the fuel line. I even by-passed the pump and gravity fed the fuel to the carb while squezzing the ball and still the same nothingness. Any thoughts?

I have tore it apart 3 or 4 times to ensure it is not. I even put in the old float to ensure that I didn't for some reason get the wrong float. Still nothing.

Needle moves freely and I can here the float move inside when I tip the carb upside down.

Re: 72 4hp Johnson tiller

I think maybe I need to go back to square one. Does anyone know the correct part number to order for the carburetor kit that will include the float. Engine is 4W72S.

I have found reference to part number 383067. However, the pics of that kit do not show the float and I cannot tell if the needle and seat are there. I rebuilt the carb with parts I bought one by one since I did not have the number for the kit. I did not get a new needle and seat, however, there is no deformation to the tip and it slides easily.
I have also found a part number 398532 which looks like the same gasket and looks like it may be correct. Anyone know the correct part for this re-build kit?
