'72 65hp Johnson dies with gradual "throttle-up"

Well the title sums it up. When I try to slowly increase throttle the motor just dies out. The only way to get it to accelerate is to "punch it". Once it takes off it runs great. Once I go back to idle speed I have the same problem. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, Chuck

intermediate jet on the carb is clogged up, get a rebuild kit and do them all, run wire thru the jets, spray cleaner is not good enough.
you might find a factory service manual very helpfull or watch some carb videos on youtube.

Carbs were just cleaned. Could the slow speed jets be mis-adjusted....lean/rich? Also thanks for the advice. Service manual is on it's way.
