Still having the same problem,, where it wont run unless it's higher than 3/4 throttle and even then dies, when slowed down.

Rebuilt carb, rebuilt fuel pump twice, got 100 (x2) psi compression, spark. did idle good for about 5 minutes, in the tank. Seems to be shifting good, as I did run it at high throttle on a pond, a couple years ago for 15 minutes. It has never run right since purchased from an estate sale. I had to replace the internal fuel lines, that were eaten by ethanol.

Being at wits end, I'm thinking that my only option is to bite the bullet and take it to shop, which one I checked, gets $95 hr. maybe it's a simple problem, maybe it's a money pit.

pricing newer ones is painful, I'll spend some money, but my question is it worth it - longer term? I realize it's 44 years old, but seems like it is a good motor. I want to enjoy my time on the lake, which absolutely does not include, an outboard motor, that will not start and run good each and every time.

Yes, good motor.

Sounds like you have the carb gummed up and the low speed jets are clogged. A good carb cleaning my be your ticket to utopia.
