I just bought a 72 9.8 110 Thunderbolt Merc. When I went to start it it fired right up and went to an idle. Then as soon as I give it any throttle it dies, just like you hit the kill switch. Its getting fuel, spark and has good compression. I have no clue where to even start. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks,

Re: 72 9.8 hp 110 Thunderbolt

Read the "waking an old outboard" part of the FAQ here.

Buy the motor manual like a Seloc manual or equivalent.

I have the same motor, same year, etc. I replaced the whole fuel system basically. It's almost 40 years old and any deteriorating part of it will make it run poorly. All of the hoses and gaskets. Clamps on every connection, etc. the fuel pump is easily rebuildable too.

Some of the parts are a little difficult to locate in some of the parts lists but are available.

Ok so I found out its the switch box that has gone out. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I should look to buy a new or used one of these?
