i just adopted this engine and have a few questions for the experts here.

i see no water intake ports on the lower section.......is this a water cooled engine?

there is a clear hose on the back of the engine just above where the sparkplugs mount, was wondering what it is for.

the motor ran on the old boat but wont on the new one, on the old boat there is a wire from the red(bat) to blue(ignition) acting like a jumper.
im guessing its not factory.lol

model number is 457hd and it has alternator written on the cover.

ps the water thing really has me stumped.heh.

If you have the old style lower unit, the water pick-up is on the front of the exhaust snout. It is a perforated plate and prop wash helps push water into the system.

The clear hose delivers cooling water from the exhaust chest to the thermostat and head.

If red is jumped to IGN, then the switch is probably bad. When the switch is in run or start position, battery power is delivered to the "I" terminal by switch contacts internally.
Thi blue wire attached to this terminal sends voltage to the coils. With it jumped as you describe, the engine will run but will not stop. Do not leave it attached---you will drain the battery and possibly burn out the coils.

Wire the switch red to "B", blue to "I", green to "C", yellow to "S". White and purple are not used. Orange is the overheat wire and is wired to the indicator under the dash.

One of 2 things.
Either the motor leg wasn't deep enough in the barrel. It's harder to get water to flow in the barrel then on the boat in the lake.
Or the impeller is shot and need of replacement.

There is a exhaust hole out the back the motor. when you had it running in the barrel, did you see water spitting out that hole?

I have the same Exact motor. And yes, its water cooled. When the engin is running you should see water spitting out the rear....a "tell tale". No spitting water = impeller issues. Let me know how it runs for you once u actually get it in the water. I dont think mines running right:( I'd like to compare notes.

I hve the exact same motor too 1972 45 HP, Model 457HD.
I had the same problems when running it in a barrel - it would start to overheat and no water would be coming out the exhaust hole. I placed the motor into taller barrel and that solved the problem. Water is coming out like crazy now!
