I've got a 16' Fisher boat with my 25hp Evinrude. When boating around at WOT, a tremendous amount of water splashes up from around the motor shaft and either straight up or against the boat.

I shimmed the motor, adding about an inch of wood underneath the mount to raise the entire motor higher. This has helped a bit. Adjusting the trim has also helped out a little.

Has anyone else experienced this? What causes it? What is the solution?

I assume that this backsplash and spray is slowing down my top speed.

Thanks.

Do you by any chance have a doelphin or whale tale on the lower unit? They cause a lot of spray on plane.

on my 25, it will kick up fine spray up the sides, but that goes completely away if I shim the motor up 1/2" on the transom.

Any chance you're running a long shaft motor on a 15" transom boat?

No add-ons on the lower unit.

The spray isn't a fine mist. It's like the spray from a hydroplane coming out from both sides of the motor.

My boat is 20" from transom to running pad. The motor is 22.5"-23" from motor mount to cavitation plate. I just measured it. Does that mean I should try to shim the motor up 2.5 to 3 inches?

Yep. That plate should be slightly above the keel. How far up depends on the prop youre using.

had this same problem, old faithful up the transom.... after measuring motor versus transom, i raised motor as far as i could and added a 1 1/2 inch wood block for support..... what a difference..... still need to go another 1/2 inch, but very happy with the current improvement.... top speed is better, and no more water up the transom..... thanks to articles on this forum, i solved my problems. 1979 johnson 35, 14 starcraft aluminum fishing boat.

I measured last night and I need to raise my motor 3 inches. However, I only have about 1 inch of space to raise the motor before the tightening screws (that hold the motor onto the transom) run out of boat to secure on to.

Does anyone know of a transom-raising device available for purchase? I could build an enourmous wood bracket but that would look quite awful. Any suggestions?

Sure, get a jack plate. Then you can easily adjust up or down.
