My 72 Evinrude 50 is backspitting fuel and air out both carbs. I pulled the intake manifold and popped out the reed valve bodies. They look fine. can they be bad and not look bad? Also I notice someone made the gasket from goop on the intake manifold. Honestly I never noticed any leaking of any kind on the manifold. Is there anything else that could cause the backspitting or just replace the reed valves anyway?

Thanks Chuck

My first thought was carb float...but since it's happening to both at the same time, that would be very odd.

Is it spitting or draining? Draining from the carbs is more common.

Reed valves are usually a "lifetime" part (unless removed and bent), so I would look to the gasket.

Also, check compression.

Check the timing too. I know it sounds weird, but I've seen it cause this problem. Also a good decarbonization can solve a lot of problems.

Re: 72 Evinrude 50 backspitting out carbs

Someone once described this problem to me as "sneezing". I thought that was pretty descriptive. This condition is usually associated with a too lean condition. With fixed jets there is, of course, no adjustment. I would recommend running some Seafoam in your fuel to see if the problem will clear itself. Seafoam is a cleaner that will dissolve varnish deposits that may well be partially blocking the low speed jets and forcing a lean condition. I have always found that it pays to check the cheap things first. Good luck!

Re: 72 Evinrude 50 backspitting out carbs

It was definately a carb issue. After having them off cleaning checking etc many times I reached into my Bucket-O-Parts and grabbed 2 of the 3 carbs off of a johnson 70 inline. Cleaned them real nice. Installed. Motor runs great. Plus these are fixed carbs and I dont need to fool with lean rich anymore
Thanks for helping everyone.

You might want to see if F R or Joe Reeves chime in on this one. I don't know that putting the carbs off a 70 is necessarily a bad thing, but it could be.

I would also take to opportunity to clean the old carbs and put them back on.

Most likely the reeds or reed plate. Get specs and check leaf plate opening. Cracked reeds? Cracked leaf plate manifold? Compression is irrelevant here.
