72 evinrude link n sync and carb overhaul

My 72 evinrude starflite needs a link and sync and/or a carb overhaul. Does anyone have any tricks or tips? The engine coughs and sputters for 30 seconds or so after you gas it, then it smooths out.

Do you have a Service Manual?<br /><br />If yes, study it.<br /><br />If no, get one.<br /><br />Good luck.

I have a manual, and did the process today. The timing link was hitting the throttle roller way too early, so I fixed it so it was right. I haven't had it out yet, but in the yard the boat ran well. It appears that by the timing link hitting the throttle link early, the engine wasn't getting enough timing. Am I correct? After I fixed that, I scnchronized the distributor according to the manual. It was right on.
