72 evinrude shift switch needed

my 72 crestliner was in neutral and engaged in forward with out pressing the forward button , it remains in locked in the forward postion ( I assume ) regardless of what button is pressed and of course will not start , myself and several boat owners have determined the shift switch is the problem , the switch is a 3 button for neutral , forward , reverse . I have had no luck locating the discontinued part with local boat dealers , are their other sources ? if the part cannot be located can a replacement shift be installed ?

try these guys this is where i find parts for 1972 and 1970 evinrude that are discontinued.<br /><br />Stone and Sons Marine 713-686-9997<br /><br />is this a john/rude? make sure you ohm out the solenoids in the lower unit and make sure they are fine. correct me if im wrong anyone but i believe they should be around 5 to 7 ohms.

Try on eBay - controls for OMC electric shift typically go for $5-15. I've got a couple if you get in a pinch, but would prefer not to sell.

lugnut36 , thanx for the number , parts dept indicated $ 175 .00 used / $ 275.00 new , sounds a little steep , does that sound correct ? <br />ledgefinder , thanx for the reply , when I look on e-bay I get no matches for anything near my make , year , model <br />any specific's , i like to see if the switch you have will work .

Those prices i think are a bit high but thats what happens when a part becomes hard to find. I'm not sure exactly how the control box's work themselves i know the lower unit requires 12 volts to 1 or 2 wires to change gears. So i assume the control box needs a feed of 12 volts to send to the lower unit did you make sure there was 12 volts available to control box?

Keep in mind that this is a hydro-electric unit and without the motor running will always be in forward. If the motor is running, it will be in forward if there is no 12 volts going to the lower unit.<br /><br />Good luck!

yes your right im sorry my post was misleading i was taking into factor that he was already stuck in forward gear, and thats why i said you need 12 volts to the lower unit to change gears ( out of forward ).

$175 is WAY steep. You want an OMC Hydro-Electric remote control, with a round, BLACK connector at the motor end. I know for sure they used these on 1969-1972 V4s (85/100/115/125), and changed to a completely incompatible one with a RED plug at the motor end in 1973 - at least for the V4s (85 and up) and inline 3s (65/70/75). The red one has two mechanical control cables, plus the electical bundle; the black has one mechanical control cable, plus the electical bundle. The round black connector has 3 big holes & 7 little, if I just counted right. You can match up by looking at what you've got on your motor - they're red and black as well.<br /><br />I've seen two types of these hydro-electric controllers. One has a single lever controlling throttle & gear (F-N-R), and a little lever for warm up. This one isn't flat all along the top, there's curved section under the lever. The other is a bigger, boxier one with a throttle lever for shifting and 3 pushbuttons for shifting gear F-N-R. Either one works fine if they have the round black plug - there are some earlier that DON'T have the round black and may not work, so be aware. <br /><br />Anyway, the Hydro-Electric remotes typically go for $10-$15 on eBay. To make things easy on yourself, try to get one with the right length cables and a key. If you get stuck, I'd be glad to sell you one for somewhere in between $10 and $175... jslobvan@exit3.com
